About us

We love living and working here on the edge of Dartmoor,

where we have an abundance of local growers and suppliers

whose produce helps us to lovingly create delicious, wholesome

and seasonally inspired food.

Chef Samantha Sastry's Indian heritage and creative appetite are reflected in our emphasis on Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine,

as well as dishes from other countries and closer to home.

Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes

are naturally a big part of our menus.

The Gateway is available for

private parties of up to 20 guests.

"Quite simply, the food was beautiful.

I absolutely recommend this restaurant"

"This was the finest, most delicious, clever and authentic meal I have eaten in a very long time"

Pop-up Events

Rather than opening continuously,

we offer 3 or 4 pop-up dining events during the year -

sumptuous taster menus with a variety of dishes

and a unique range of flavours.

Every element is cooked fresh here in our kitchens

by chef Samantha Sastry.

We have a licensed bar with a range of wines, beers, spirits and cocktails.

This year we started with a Gateway to India event,

based around the Southern Indian thali; during the summer we offered the Gateway to the Middle East, with a generous spread of sharing plates

Our current event, the Gateway to Korea, is our take on the exciting variety of flavours and dishes in Korean street food, and is fully booked.

The Gateway to India

...will be our next pop-up event in February and March 2023.

If you are not already on our mailing list, we suggest subscribing

so that we can tell you as soon as the dates are confirmed.

Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes are naturally

a big part of our menus, but please let us know about any dietary requirements or allergies when you book.

For more information, or to book a table,

please contact us by phone or email.

Our story

IMG_1407_edited.jpg

We took over the long-established Gateway Tea Room in 2015, breathing new life into the 17th century building, and creating a menu with traditional elements as well as more adventurous and

exotic dishes.

Every winter we transformed the tea room into an authentic South Indian thali restaurant, and last year we decided to make the transformation permanent and offer globally-inspired food along with homely meals in a comfortable restaurant setting.

We are blessed on Dartmoor with a wealth of mindful producers who, like us, believe that local, low-impact, sustainable food and drink supplies should be the norm.  For us, locally sourced means just up the road!
