Welcome to the Gateway

Fresh food, cooked with love, in intimate, friendly surroundings

to About

About us

We love living and working here on the edge of Dartmoor,

where we have an abundance of local growers and suppliers

whose produce helps us to lovingly create delicious, wholesome

and seasonally inspired food.

Chef Samantha Sastry's Indian heritage and creative appetite are reflected in our emphasis on Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine,

as well as dishes from other countries and closer to home.

Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes

are naturally a big part of our menus.

The Gateway is available for

private parties of up to 20 guests.

"Quite simply, the food was beautiful.

I absolutely recommend this restaurant"

"This was the finest, most delicious, clever and authentic meal I have eaten in a very long time"

Pop-up Events

Pop-up Events

Rather than opening continuously,

we offer 3 or 4 pop-up dining events during the year -

sumptuous menus with a variety of dishes

and a unique range of flavours.

Every element is cooked fresh here in our kitchens

by chef Samantha Sastry.

We are now taking bookings for our next pop-up event

The Gateway to India

With traditional elements alongside more modern

street food influences,  inspired by Samantha's Andra Pradesh heritage.

The Gateway to India event

will be held on these evenings:

Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th February

Thursday 2nd,  Friday 3rd,  Saturday 4th March

Thursday 9th,  Friday 10th,  Saturday 11th March

Thursday 16th,  Friday 17th,  Saturday 18th March

Advance booking is essential.

The cost is £42.00 per person, and we have a licensed bar

with a range of wines, beers, spirits and cocktails.

Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes are naturally

a big part of our menus, but please let us know about any dietary requirements or allergies when you book.

We do not ask for a deposit to secure your booking;

however, if you cancel or reduce the number of guests

at less than 48 hours notice, we will look to you to cover the cost.

For more information, or to book a table,

please contact us by phone or email.

If you are not already on our mailing list, we suggest subscribing

so that you can be kept up to date with new events.

Our story

IMG_1407_edited.jpg

We took over the long-established Gateway Tea Room in 2015, breathing new life into the 17th century building, and creating a menu with traditional elements as well as more adventurous and

exotic dishes.

Every winter we transformed the tea room into an authentic South Indian thali restaurant, and last year we decided to make the transformation permanent and offer globally-inspired food along with homely meals in a comfortable restaurant setting.

We are blessed on Dartmoor with a wealth of mindful producers who, like us, believe that local, low-impact, sustainable food and drink supplies should be the norm.  For us, locally sourced means just up the road!
